A 36 member team represented the Wyndham City Swimming Club over the three day meet, and I’m extremely pleased to report that of more than 80 competing clubs from Victoria and interstate, we achieved our best ever result, placing sixth overall in the final points standing. 16 members of our team attained 71 finals qualifying spots, winning seven gold, six silver and six bronze medals. Our new Victorian Age Short Course Champions are: Ryland Brian – Boys 11 & under, 100 and 200m Backstroke and 200 I.M. Josh Furnival – Boys 11 & under, 200m Butterfly Natalie Vercher – Girls 15, 100m Freestyle Dylan Sadler – Boys 15 200m Butterfly Andrew Jarvis – Boys 15 100m Backstroke There were nine individual medallists for the Sharks over the course of the meet: Ryland Brian – Three gold and one bronze Josh Furnival – One gold and one silver Jesse May – Two silver and two bronze Natalie Vercher – One gold and one bronze Petar Shelev – One bronze Andrew Jarvis – One gold and one silver Dylan Sadler – One gold Caitlin Eccles – One silver and one bronze Marko Ivosev – One silver In terms of pure statistics, 44% of our team made finals and 56% of our finalists won medals. Of the most pleasing aspects in terms of numbers, 97% (35/36) of our team swam at least one P.B. and our squad groups all attained 90% or more P.B. swims over the course of the championship. A fantastic result for our club, a just reward for the efforts of swimmers and their parents, and I’m sure my coaching colleagues will agree, a most satisfying vindication of the swimming programs offered at Wyndham City Sharks! The sharks finished eighth overall and the top west suburban club at the six day meet which featured the best young swimmers in Victoria. Leading the shark pack was 18 year old 'Madam Butterfly' Alicia Danaher who won both the 100m butterfly (1.01.91) and 200m butterfly (2.19.97) championship events and was 2nd in the 200m freestyle. 18 year old Kristy Dellios was champion in the 200m Backstroke event (2.17.96) and finished 3rd in the 200m freestyle and 100m backstroke 14 year old Andrew Jarvis had a thrilling win in the 100m Backstroke (1.02.10). His busy program also saw him win two silver medals in the 100m butterfly and 200m backstroke, bronze in the 50m freestyle and another 4 top 10 finishes for a total of 8 finals appearances, equal with another young shark 16 year old Caitlin Eccles who broke through for her first longcourse state medals winning silver in the 100m butterfly and bronze in the 200m butterfly. Two 16 year old girls showed promise in their butterfly events to finish with top 10 placings, Carly Botheras, Natalie Tzelepis as well as 14 year old Dylan Sadler. Overall the clubs 45 strong squad won 4 gold, 7 silver and 7 bronze medals and had another 46 top 10 placings. Head Coach Paul Taylor will now take his squad to a high performance training camp at Runaway Bay in Queensland during January where the squad will undertake intensive training before the Australian Championships in April. A highlight of the camp will be a training session held under the guidance of Michael Bolle who is the coach of Olympian Stephanie Rice.
