Introducing our Coaches... 

Wyndham City Swimming Club Coaches have been dedicated to their club over many years. They show personal talent, commitment and expertise and have the necessary qualifications to lead the club to future successes at the highest level. 
 

 
Paul Taylor
 
Paul is a qualified Silver Licence coach and has coached the National Squad at the Werribee Sharks
Swimming Club, now the Wyndham City Swimming Club, since 2006.  Paul has developed numerous Victorian Champions and Australian Age Championship finalists and medalists since he took over as head coach of the Sharks in 2006.
 
Paul started swimming with the Werribee Swimming Club in 1988.  He swam at competition levels including club, district, state and national, and competed for the club for 14 years.  He was heavily involved with open water/surf swimming and triathlon at the end of his swimming career, winning several open water events and racing competitively for the Western Suburbs Triathlon Club.  Paul still competes in the Lorne Pier to Pub annually and completed his 18th swim in 2009.  During his time as an athlete, Paul was the Werribee Swimming Club captain in the 1993/94, 1994/95 and 1996/97 seasons.

Paul began coaching at the Werribee Swimming Club in 1998.  He coached recreational and junior squads for eight years and then began undertaking technique classes for small groups of Werribee swimmers.  Paul was also a swimming teacher at various centres around Werribee between 1997 and 2001. 

Paul is a qualified primary/secondary school teacher.  He taught at Seabrook Primary for six years after university and at Newport Lakes Primary since 2007.  Paul is currently the Physical Education Coordinator at NewportLakes and delivers the PE program from Prep to Grade 6. 
 

 
Peter Botheras
A former swimming club captain and district record holder, Peter's more than 30 year involvement in
swimming and water polo began when as an 8 year old, he joined theNewport (now known as Altona) Amateur Swimming and Lifesaving Club during the 1973-74 season.

Over a 15 year period Peter represented Newport/Altona at State, District and club levels, captaining the Altona Swimming Club during the 1980's, a period when Altona had more than 200 swimmers and were the strongest club in Melbourne's west.

For more than 20 years, Peter represented the Altona Water Polo Club, highlighted by his inclusion in the Victorian junior men's sides of 1982 - 1983.
Peter was a coach at Altona before giving up swimming to pursue other interests. He returned to coaching
in 2003 with the Werribee Sharks.  A qualified level one (now bronze level) swimming coach, Peter attended the Silver Licence Coaching Course at the Australian Coaching Convention in 2008 and is on the way to becoming a fully accredited Silver Licence Coach.

Away from the pool Peter, a qualified Electronics Technician, has also played competitive football with the Yarraville Football Club, turf cricket with Bucks Cricket Club and competitive basketball and badminton.
Peter also enjoys reading, surfing and hotrod cars.
 

 
Samantha Bloder
 
Sam swam competitively for the Werribee Swimming Club from the age of 6 - 19.  She competed at state,
district and national levels, and also swam twice at the world cup.  Her greatest sporting achievements include a gold medal at the national school games in the 50m fly and gold in a state relay at the national championships.
 
Sam has been a qualified bronze licence coach since 2004, and has been coaching since 2000. Sam attended the Silver Licence Coaching Course at the Australian Coaching Convention in 2009 and is on the way to becoming a fully accredited Silver Licence Coach.  She is also a qualified Austswim teacher and currently works full time at a swim school in Footscray.  Sam has been teaching swimming since 2002.
 
Sam has been extremely successful both as an athlete and a coach.  Many of her young swimmers have excelled under her guidance, with Esther Overton making the World Championships team and Beijing Olympics for swimmers with a disability under Sam's direction.  Sam has just been appointed assistant coach of the SWD Victorian squad.  Her greatest coaching achievement would be coaching Esther to making the Australian team and then winning two silver medals at the world championships.
 

 
Jeanette Goonan
 
Jeanette started her swimming at the Colac Swimming Club.  In country Colac, learn to swim programs were
held once a year for two weeks during the summer holidays.  It was expected that senior members of the swimming club would assist, so this is where Jeanette's teaching career began. 
 
As a university student (studying primary teaching) Jeanette was able to gain her Vicswim Certificate in 1978 which was upgraded to the Austswim Certificate in 1980.  She has taught swimming ever since, reaccrediting her Austswim qualification every 3 to 5 years since 1980.  In 1982, Jeanette first qualified as a level one swimming coach and was reaccredited in 1998.  Jeanette has attended the ASCTA conference yearly to keep abreast with the latest developments in competitive swimming.
 
In 2009 Jeanette completed her Green Coaching Licence through recognition of prior learning and also attended the Bronze Coaching Course.
 
Jeanette has completed courses in Education Language and Literacy, as well as Teachers Aide and Integration Aide courses.  Jeanette spends her days working at the Werribee Open Range Zoo and also teaches swimming at the Laverton Swim Centre.


Scott Cunningham 
 
Scott began coaching at the Sharks in 2008.  He has undertaken training as a Green Licence Coach and has
worked at various swim centres in learn to swim (from beginners to pre-squad), schools programs and with special needs children.  Scott has attained further qualifications by attending the 'Towards Competitive Strokes' and 'Aquatics for People with Disabilities' courses.  He has held an Australian Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety Certificate since 2007 and is also a lifeguard at our pool.
 
Martial Arts have played a big part in Scott's life.  He has a background in Japanese Senjutsu Ryu Ju-jitsu.  Away from the pool he is a Senior Instructor (1st Dean Black Belt) and works with children from five years to teens.  He also trains in Shinkendo (traditional Japanese swordsmanship).  Scott's other interests include Yoga, Reiki and Watsu (water Shiatsu).   
 
Scott has a Certificate III/IV in Personal Training and intends to continue studies to Diploma level.  He sees swimming as an excellent environment in which to share healthy life-skills and aspire to produce personal bests.
  

Robert Stickels
 
Robbie currently trains in the National Squad with the Sharks.  He started his swimming career in our recreational
squads in 1999 and has progressed through the ranks.  Robbie has represented our club at National level inPerth, Kawana Waters and inSydney at the Australian Open Water Championships.
 
In the 2008/2009 season, Robbie was elected Vice Captain and then Club Captain in the 2009/2010 season.  Robbie aims to continue to improve the technique and skills of our junior club swimmers.
 
Robbie completed his Austswim Teacher of Swimming Course in August, 2008 and has been teaching and coaching swimming at two venues since then.
 
 
 
 

Alana Castree
 
Alana swam for the Werribee Sharks from 2001 to 2007.  She swam competitively at club, district and state
levels.
 
Alana began coaching with the Wyndham Sharks in 2008.  She has worked closely with Sam Bloder to develop our junior and recreational squads.  Alana completed her Green Coaching Licence in early 2009.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

Leilani Wright
 
Leilani started swimming with the Sharks in 1999.  She swam competitively for the next eight years at club, district
 and state levels.  Leilani decided to complete her work experience hours coaching with the Sharks in 2007 and has never looked back. 
 
After shadowing our senior coaches, Leilani became an assistant coach and completed her Green Coaching Licence in 2008.   She has coached various state, junior and recreational squads at the Wyndham City Swimming Club to date.
